The design movement began in the 20th Century. Modern Style furnishings and decor celebrate natural materials, neutral or earthy colours, and the elimination of unnecessary detailing. It uses monochromatic colours whilst the Contemporary style has a wide range and variety of colours. The typical characteristics are mainly structural elements (concrete and beams) are often left exposed; emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines with fewer curves; lack of fluff; low, horizontal furnishings with clean lines; a celebration of natural light unadorned windows; natural materials such as unpainted wood, metals, leather and natural fibres; neutral/natural colour palette; reflective surfaces such as steel, chrome or glass and natural woods and wood veneers.
