London based architecture practice William Matthews Associates together with civil engineers Ney & Partners have won the English Heritage competition for the footbridge on Cornwall’s breathtaking Tintagel Castle site with its amazing modern architecture.
The winning design beat off stiff competition from 136 other entries from all across Europe with a footbridge in one of the UK most spectacular historic sites that attracts some 200,000 visitors annually.
Instead of opting for a standard bridge crossing, this footbridge is designed as two independent cantilevers that reach out and almost touch in the middle.

The gap represents the transition between the mainland and the island, as well as past and present, reality and legend.
The footbridge that offers spectacular views of the surrounding area is made out of steel, oak and slate.
