Top United States Interior Designers – part 2

Jeffrey Bilhuber

Top United States Interior Designers

Jeffrey Bilhuber has a talent for staying busy. The decorator, who received the Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York School of Interior Design, not only works with A-list clients such as Mariska Hargitay, Iman, and the late David Bowie, but she also designs her own product lines, including flat weave carpets for Elson & Co. and porcelain dinnerware for de Gournay. He has written or had books written about him for Rizzoli, including Everyday Decorating and The Way Home: Reflections on American Beauty. But, regardless of the medium, you can always count on a dash of tradition mixed with cutting-edge design in his projects.

Joy Moyler Interiors

Top United States Interior Designers

Joy Moyler credits her career to her time spent there as a 14-year-old. She was captivated by Madrid and Barcelona’s colours, textures, angles, light, enticement, smells, and fragrances, not to mention their stunning architecture. Moyler has developed a “classic and crisp with a current vibe” aesthetic and taste over the years. After stints at John Saladino, Thierry Despont, and what she refers to as “Ralph Lauren University,” she developed this fashionable look.

Julie Hillman Design

Top United States Interior Designers

“Working as a ready-to-wear designer for ten years provided me with a strong understanding of textiles, which has been invaluable,” says Hillman of Julie Hillman Design. “I want my interiors to be unexpectedly beautiful and subtle.” They are as well. For her contemporary yet elegantly eclectic domestic habitats, she draws inspiration from everything from Donald Judd sculptures to the old-meets-new juxtapositions of Copenhagen’s streetscapes (Manhattan town houses, a Hamptons escape, an Aspen retreat). “From my daily walk to work to travelling to see art and architecture, I am constantly looking at art and design,” she claims.

Kelly Behun Studio

Top United States Interior Designers

During her first days of work at Ian Schrager Hotels’ in-house studio, young designer Behun was assigned a task: to observe legendary French designer Andrée Putman as she renovated Morgans, which she designed and is widely regarded as the first boutique hotel. A better training ground than that, according to Behun, who previously worked with Philippe Starck, is difficult to imagine. A glimmer of Schrager’s storied style can now be seen in her work on projects where excellent art and daring furnishings come together brilliantly at her own namesake design firm.

Leyden Lewis Design Studio

Top United States Interior Designers

According to the designer, “we have a love for making theatre for life” at Leyden Lewis. Given that the Parsons School of Design alum from Brooklyn is something of a triple threat in the aesthetic world: The decorator has a distinguished background as a fine artist as well as architectural training. This latter activity contributes to his overall admiration for modern paintings and sculpture, which runs through his interiors in a consistent and occasionally vibrant thread.

Markham Roberts Inc.

Markham Roberts believes that adaptability is essential for success. The New York-based designer, who studied under Mark Hampton before launching his own company in 1997, is equally at home working with ancient Chinese designs as he is with cutting-edge modern art. Perhaps this explains why his international clientele has hired him for jobs on mountain chalets and urban penthouses, among other things.

Rafael de Cárdenas Ltd.

Rafael de Cárdenas was inspired to leave his job as a Calvin Klein clothes designer to pursue a degree in architecture after reading a New York Times article describing Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao as “the reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe.” In 2006, he launched his own company and quickly established a reputation for creating evocative environments for both residential and commercial projects, including Ulla Johnson’s Manhattan showroom, the Baccarat flagship store in New York, and the Seoul Kenzo boutique.

Redd Kaihoi

Top United States Interior Designers

In 2019, designer Miles Redd made David Kaihoi a partner at his namesake firm and changed the name to reflect the new partnership—Redd Kaihoi was born. For over a decade, the pair has worked together, fusing Redd’s eccentric style (influenced by his studies with antiquarian John Rosselli and designer Bunny Williams) and Kaihoi’s artistically influenced vision (he met Redd when he was working as an art installer and ceramist).

Robert Stilin

Top United States Interior Designers

Robert Stilin is well-versed in the history of design. He has surrounded his New York City home with prestigious pieces such as a Pierre Chapo chair, a Charlotte Perriand stool, and a Paul Laszlo lamp. In addition, he has amassed a sizable art collection. “I won’t buy it if I have even the slightest doubt. If I keep thinking about it, I’ll find a way to incorporate it into my life, he says. Stilin uses his extensive design expertise and refined artistic taste to create cosy, livable homes that radiate warmth for his clients.

Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors

Top United States Interior Designers

Since opening Roman and Williams in Manhattan in 2002, Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch have received praise for their ability to bring time-honored traditions into contemporary settings, with architecture and interiors firmly rooted in a current paradigm of craftsmanship and history. In addition to designing residences for celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, the husband-and-wife team has established trends with their renowned work on hotels, restaurants, and cultural institutions such as London’s Nomad Hotel, The Tin Building, the British Galleries at The Met Museum, and the city’s most talked-about club Maison Estelle.

RP Miller

Top United States Interior Designers

Rodman Primack is not afraid of colour, as evidenced by his firm’s daring interiors, which include a luxurious London townhouse, a rustic Kentucky farmhouse, and a tropical getaway in Hawaii. For his initiatives, he draws on his international network of artisans, sometimes even using his own in-house developed fabrics. Glassware from a family-run studio in Venice and Talavera pottery from Mexico are among the tabletop home products offered by RP Miller and lifestyle company The Elder Statesman (Primack and his husband live in Mexico City).

S.R. Gambrel Inc.

According to Steven Gambrel, the goal of S.R. Gambrel is simple: “create an environment that seems synonymous with the architectural vernacular and the essence of the client’s lifestyle.” In other words, while his interiors are historically inspired, they also have a lot of personality. Since founding S.R. Gambrel in 1996, the designer has worked on residential and commercial projects from Aspen to Miami to Hong Kong. He has also launched a lighting collaboration with The Urban Electric Co., an accessories line with Lacquer Company, and bathroom fixtures with Waterworks.
