Studio Gang

The heart of the Studio is a lively, communal, hands-on space where each member of the team is encouraged to build, investigate, and explore. Crafted as much by hand as by sophisticated digital tools, their models are tools that push and elevate the firm’s designs.

Studio Gang

Studio Gang has won numerous awards, including the 2016 Architizer A+ Firm of the Year Award and the 2013 National Design Award from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

1. Brick Weave House

The Brick Weave House sits on the footprint of a century-old stable on an eclectic block of Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. By removing the original front walls and roof, the design creates a garden through subtraction, surrounded by a brick screen that both reveals and encloses the private courtyard and house beyond.

2. Harbor Point Residence

Located in the Harbor Point high-rise, a 52-story tower constructed in the early 1970s, this residence was originally two separate apartments. Combining the units into a single home, the design makes use of a limited palette of finishes and colors to simplify and expand the space while enhancing its incredible views of the city.

3. Maisonette

Studio Gang, Creating Interiors That Connect People

Maisonette transforms a former ballroom space into a comfortable modern home and sleek showcase for the family’s art collection. Roughly hewn masonry walls and concrete columns retain their texture, pleasantly contrasting with the malleable qualities of steel and glass, which form floating platforms above the main living spaces. Perforated steel plates form a passerelle between the platforms, while steel plates with smaller perforations create a series of acoustic doors for storage areas.

4. PAHC Studio

Studio Gang, Creating Interiors That Connect People

Art making requires an intimacy between the artist and her medium as much as it requires a close relationship between the artist and her physical space. Studio Gang’s design for the PAHC Studio prioritizes healthy indoor air quality to facilitate the artist’s work with often noxious materials, while creating a crisp and meditative architectural environment that supports her process.

5. City Hyde Park

Studio Gang, Creating Interiors That Connect People

City Hyde Park by Studio Gang reimagines the urban apartment building, bringing new options for living, recreation, and leisure to its full-block site—formerly a strip mall and under-used parking lot. Located at a busy commercial intersection near Lake Michigan and adjacent to a commuter rail stop, it is designed as a pedestrian-friendly hub that has a positive impact on the greater urban evolution of its neighborhood.

6. Belden Loft

Studio Gang, Creating Interiors That Connect People

In the Belden Loft, an interior courtyard replaces the typical external balcony, enhancing both comfort and style. The courtyard opens to the sky, bringing sunlight and fresh air to the entire space. The vertical dimension of the courtyard further assists in ventilating both floors by creating a stack effect. Studio Gang‘s design achieves a pleasant mix of both “rough” and “fine” finishes.

7. Columbia College Chicago Media Production Center

By making typically behind-the-scenes aspects of the filmmaking process visible, the Columbia College Media Production Center is more than a building in which learning takes place: it is itself a valuable teaching and media production tool.
