SBID 2018: International Design Excellence Awards

Overall Winner – VR Park Dubai Mall (4SPACE Design)

The overall winner was a brilliant virtual reality park in Dubai . The VR Park Dubai Mall is designed to give its visitors a staggering experience. The idea came from Emaar Entertainment. They wanted to create a brand new attraction Dubai. The concept design set on futuristic spaces and elements. Right at the entrance, we are faced with a huge 90-degree curved LED display screen together with a cityscape buildings of Dubai downtown bent upside down. The main focus of the park’s interiors was the Burk Khalifa.

This experience was only possible due to 4SPACE. With their work, it was possible to get the right finishes, feel and look of the tallest bulding in the world. 4SPACE has been working over the last 15 years in Dubai. They’re distinguished by their design of retail, commercial and hospitality and living spaces. They are also involved in exhibitions.

CGI & Visualisation Winner – RiverStone (Alena Zhernovaya Interior Design)

This 130 square-metre apartment is located in the RiverStone residential complex. The main focus was to create a modern interior design. The kitchen and the living room are designed in an open plan. The master bedroom is a private area to the living room. The main materials for this design were natural stone, mirrors and porcelain stoneware. The wood wall panelling in the bedroom further stresses the main ideas of this magnificent design.

The designer behind this idea is Alena Zhernovaya. The Russian designer has been working for over 9 years in the field and has as her main goal to create stunning environments, from public lofts to private cozy apartments.

The moment you enter in the concrete lift area you find brass installations that reflect the light. The Juniper & Kin at the QO is located in Amsterdam and it’s one of the most luxurious club/bars that you will ever see. The main idea for this design was the shine of a starry night. The chosen colour scheme for the was black and white as well as dark green, mixing it with dark wood and velvet. The bar and the kitchen are located in the middle area, in order to make this spaces the main focus of the bar.

The responsible team for this projects was IHG. They have an architecture and design team ready to build or renovate the most stunning hotels acrosse the world. Their motto is “True Hospitality”.

Healthcare Design Winner – Brooklyn Health Center (Francis Cauffman Architects)

Can you imagine a health center that does not look like a health center at all? That’s the Brooklyn Health Center. The location is a glass-faced eleven-storey mixed-use building. They expanded the area by using a privately owned public space (a 2,000-square-foot park, built for public use and maintained by the owner of the building). The main idea was to create a project that “as a red object encased in glass—the building’s beating heart”.  It’s in a shape of a teardrop-like form was designed to complement the vibrancy and ingenuity of downtown Brooklyn.

The brains behind this idea belong to Francis Cauffman Architects. They design spaces always having in mind environmental resposibilites and long-term viability for the planet Earth. FCA have developed work in many areas: hospitals, schools and even Spotify, amongst others.

The design of Mombo is Botswana is quite spectacular. The combination of traditional and vintage elements together with elegance gave this place a unique design. The deconstructed furniture in classic styles and the use of materials such as antique brass finishing, vintage leathers, copper lighting, as well as marble and oak floors were the elements for this look.

This is a work of Artichoke. Even though they have a special focus on kitchens, they have also worked on projects concerning sculleries, dressing rooms, libraries, boot rooms, gun roons, butler’s pantry and cellars all over the world. The design company has been in practice for 25 years and focus exclusively in private homes in the UK as well as overseas.

On the shore of Lake Chao in China, we can find the Wanda Vista Hefei. This urban resort offers staggering lake views. This hotel has 206 guestrooms, each one with a balcony so the guests can enjoy a 180 degree view of the lake. When it comes to interior design the choice relied on symmetry: it is composed by white walls, black tiles and grey bricks, all connected to the Huizhou style architecture.

This project was only possible due to the work of the Wanda Hotel Design Institute, founded in 2007. In the last 10 years, the company has been worked in 74 regions and has designed 102 hotels.  But their talent doesn’t stop here: they are also experts in electro-mechanics, lighting, artworks, kitchen & laundry, signage and many other fields.

The Contemporary Kitchen & Bar in New Zealand is the perfect example of modern design. It features sharp, clean lines and has bold asymmetrical forms in a white palette. The geometric structure of the kitchen features bead-blasted stainless steel that contrasts with the white Corian. The material of the floor is timber.

The chosen team for this project was Celia Visser Design. The company is famous for their exceptional kitchens, bathrooms & interior in high-end residentials in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

The building is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Discovery Place is divided into three main atria, more specifically a central atrium, and one on each side. The concept for the project was a concourse, driven by Discovery’s requirement for the building to be active. This was also reflected into an active public street populated with seating areas, cafés, streetlights and tree canopies.

The Paragon Group is the head of this project. The Paragon Architects was formed in 1997 by Anthony Orelowitz and Henning Rasmuss. The team is composed by 88 people that keep working in projects in the whole African continent, where they work in innovative projects.

The Triumph Factory Visitor Experience is the perfect place for motorcycle enthusiasts and general public. The place offers a 1200 square metre exhibition and factory tour, including a café and a shop. The exhibition has a chronology of Triumph’s historic and contemporary achivements in motorcycle design, engineergin and manufacture.

Studio MB are exhibition design company working with museums and heritage destinations all over the United Kingdom and abroad that has grown in the last 13 years. The quality of their work is among the best in UK, and the satifaction of their clients is their top priority.

The Cuscaden One really was a passionate project in Singapore. The intent of the client was to have a relaxed with a funky, edgy style apartment that would cater for his family, but that could also held larger gathering with plenty of seating and a informal atmosphere. The design team chose a monochrome palette in order to reflect the simplicity of the space but also to make it look calm. The design came out as expected: a warm and intimate space for family but also delightful for larger crowds.

Elliot James was the responsible for this project. The company was formed in 2012 with the goal to work on luxury residential and commercial projects not only in Singapore but also overseas. The British interior designers specialise in office design and renovation, retail, hospitality and home design and architecture.

A waterfront home with contemporary lines is the main definition of this place. It took two and half years for the project to be concluded and the final outcome could not have been better: a luxury-drivel family residence. The beautiful materials, classical order and a clean-lined sensibility are the extras of this place.

Regina Sturrock Design was the responsible for this project. They are involved in many areas of the filed such as architectural planning and design, design concept development, space planning and furniture layouts, materials, finishes and furnishings selections, accessories and art selections and placement, amongst others.

The Irrawady House in Malaysia is the modern-day luxury home that manages to combine both old-school opulence and contemporary cosiness under the same roof. The superior air ventilation incorporated into the interior of this property allows it to feel larger and spacious. The living room is connceted with the kitchen, dining area and open bar with a classical european design. This house also includes circular pendants and an imported Italian marble counter. The finishes are in gold.

Nevermore Design really went extra for this project. The design oriented firm based in Penang, presentes expertise in architecture, interior design, and urban design. Founded by Chuah Say Yang and Chuah Say Win they offer all kinds of services: urban planning, architecture, landscape, interiors and branding.

The Garden in Edinburgh is a all-day food-and-beverage space destinated for hotel guests and local Edinburgh residents. It’s located within the former courtyard of the Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square. It got its design inspiration for the great great hothouses and orangeries of historic country estates. The place features a green heart scheme, making the outdoor space a fantastic place to have dinner. The place is also fillded with plants, trees, hanging baskets and vines.

Goddard Littlefair was in charge of this project. The London-based luxury interior design studio was established in 2012 by Martin Goddard and Jo Littlefair. They are present in spa projects, hospitality and high-end residentials.

The Latitude Sports Park is a multipurpose athletic indoor sports space aimed at young people and family activities. ‘Sports for everyone’ is the motto for both the style and recreation concept and it is expected that design will motivate more people to join the space. The idea of the design studio was to create a place where fun could be mingled with sport activities, so that a more active lifestyle could be linked with leisure time.

XYI Design has been working since 2007. The company has two mottos:  “every cloud has a silver lining” and “Excellent Design simply comes from necessary elements and functions”. They are specialized in commercial and residential interior design, interior design consultation and management  information, furnishings and interior decoration, landscape design, garden design, furniture design as well as Holistic visual design.

In flourishing Hangzhou in China, surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes, the luxurious Trevista Sales Gallery presents a unique concept through flowing space lines, rich textural materials and artistic decoration. The inspiration for this design came from the textures of “water, moutain and silk”. The project plays with light and form altogether and the ‘super flat’ architecture style makes this project stand out among the other luxury residences in the area.

HWCD (Harmony World Consultant and Design) was the orchestrator of this project. The 500 people team is based in Londo, Shanghai and Barcelona. They work in many projects related to urban design, boutique hotels, high-end residential, commercial design and art consulting.
