Calm, sophisticated and luxurious describes this spacious lakeside Penthouse overlooking Toronto’s expansive skyline on the shores of Lake Ontario. It was a wonderful opportunity to reinvent a 3,500 square foot residence for a well-travelled businesswoman. Elizabeth Metcalfe brief was simple: create a ‘hotel-like’ residence flexible to host large parties, while maintaining the intimacy of a private home. Demolishing a warren of angled partition walls to bare concrete slabs revealed a shell waiting to be transformed into a light-filled home. Elizabeth Metcalfe goal was to define the interior architecture and design a floor plan that divided the space into two separate zones, one public and one private. It was important to create a beautiful Foyer that introduced the design vision and visually felt connected to the open living area. A custom installation of three pivoting metal and tinted glass screens define the area without closing it off. A neutral colour story, quiet natural finishes, and understated silhouettes were incorporated to showcase the overall experience of viewing the spectacular vistas. A structural wall clad in pale limestone separates the Living Room from the Dining Area and Kitchen, while still keeping the flow of space open for entertaining large groups of friends and family. Original art and artisanal pieces were carefully curated for their beauty and easy elegance. A well-appointed private Master Bedroom Suite at the opposite end of the Penthouse consists of a large Bedroom, comfortable Den, serene Bathroom and a spacious Closet all connected by a lovely Entry Hall that can be easily closed off with a set of custom pocket doors. Large expansions of glass bring in abundant natural light to accentuate the pure lines of the understated architecture creating a vision of contemporary luxury.
Located in Italy, Lake Como is known for its dramatic scenery and lovely water lilies. COMO Armchair is a tribute to this natural beauty. This velvet lounge chair is fully upholstered in cotton velvet, making it an excellent chair design to relax after a long day. Featuring a structure in matte black lacquered brass and shades in matte brass, this chandelier is perfect for creating a grand reveal over a fierce living room sofa.
There’s a delicate balance in honouring a century-old home’s past and redefining it for a modern family’s lifestyle. With care and respect, Elizabeth Metcalfe accepted the challenge and designed a home that feels relevant for its newest reincarnation. Sunlit and shadowy; classic and contemporary, this home resonates a beauty that was part of its original charm. The formal Living Room combines definitive modern silhouettes within a traditional envelope. It exudes luxury without being pretentious or unapproachable. A mix of styles effortlessly relates to one another. In contrast to the feminine nature of the Living Room, the Study is decidedly masculine. The vibrant palette of a traditional area rug anchors contemporary furnishings, millwork and lighting fixtures. Richly coloured mohair, flannel, and horsehair are all traditional fibres, that adds warmth and texture to modern frames. A multi-layered plaster ceiling in the Dining Room is an unexpected strategy, bridging traditional features with modern elements. A custom marble dining table and minimal furnishings define this room on its own terms. In the breakfast room, Danish-designed chairs, an Italian light fixture, a hand-painted stool by Venezuelan artist Reinaldo Sanguino and a rustic cowhide, happily mix with one another. On the second floor, a reimagined Master Bedroom Sitting Room is grounded by an exceptionally beautiful original marble fire surround. Keeping the furnishings simple brings elegance to this casually sophisticated room. A curved custom lacquered screen anchors an upholstered headboard in the Master Bedroom. Dramatic wall sconces, a Diego Giacometti inspired white plaster light fixture, and a beautiful upholstered bench is distinct elements that create a space that feels ageless, balanced and united. In the corner sits a magical shagreen chair by R&Y Augousti as if to command unabashed attention. Beauty redefined for the 21st century.
This completely newly built home on Oakville’s lakeshore is rooted in classic design and modern sensibility. While working closely with the architect and builder, Elizabeth Metcalfe created a beautiful home for a young family from the ground up. The owners wanted a home that was luxurious and sophisticated for entertaining and at the same time modern and comfortable for their young family. Running seamlessly through the home are subtle references that repeat an undeniable sense of calm, harmony, and balance. The foyer is a home’s first impression; the custom rift-cut oak wall panels and wool fabric wrapped panels set the tone for the home. The same design details are repeated into the dining room where the bronze etched mirror above the fireplace casts a glow that reflects the mood of this elegant space. The back of the home features a large kitchen, breakfast area and great room that has a much lighter and fresh feel.
Agra is the modest setting of one of the most famous monuments in the world, the Taj Mahal, also known as the marble mausoleum. Just like it, AGRA Dining Table is an impressive display of craftsmanship and elegance. Made of Estremoz marble with polished gold details, this round dining table will add refined grace.
When Elizabeth Metcalfe clients approached them to help them select a home to purchase in the Bridle Path area in Toronto, the team knew this spectacular home was the one. The polished white marble slab flooring and ivory panelled walls created a blank envelope to add layers of soft colours and contrasting textures. Elizabeth Metcalfe incorporated a large, round tufted ottoman that was bold and dominating to anchor the space and add undeniable luxury. The size of the grand reception hall, open to the upper mezzanine level, needed to be grounded, and at the same time, draw your eye upward to appreciate the beautifully hand-crafted glass dome above. A composition of furniture in the centre of the grand hall creates a strong statement. Contrasting shapes, metals, and textures create an inviting vignette leading your eye towards the living room. The perfect shade of mulberry coloured velvet drapery is trimmed with an intricately laser-cut ivory wool flower motif along the leading edges. Elizabeth Metcalfe kept their lines simple and spare. The juxtaposition of opposing forms feels modern, approachable, and unexpectedly at home in this architecturally traditional room.
Working within the confines of a typical builder high-rise condo unit, Elizabeth Metcalfe started with an underlying structure to layer an interconnected network of geometric shapes and strong silhouettes to add balance, rhythm, and unity. Deliberate vertical and horizontal lines within the architectural envelope were softened by the curves and organic nature of the furnishings, area rugs and artwork. A neutral colour palette consisting of nude, blush, lilac and soft gold was accentuated with a sophisticated black thread throughout the space. A long, oversized marble shelf at the entrance is an unexpected detail to draw you into the open concept Living Space. An elongated ceiling-mounted lacquered panel allowed Elizabeth Metcalfe to play with the existing fixed lighting placements and introduce a collection of hand-blown glass globes encased in a copper mesh at one end and a modern triangular light fixture at the other. The panel echoes the core structure by emphasizing the length of the space and culminating in an unanticipated dramatic piece of art by Andrea Torres. Suspended amongst the clouds, it creates an unquestionably modernist viewpoint. Although the Study is open to the Dining Room, the custom millwork integrates nicely. It is both practical and beautiful, with room to display art, books and accessories. To minimize the location of the bedroom door off the living area, the wall was covered in an understated blush silk wall covering. The Bedroom is modern, tailored and restrained, utilizing a Hérmes link print, a dual coloured custom nightstand and an ottoman covered in a contemporary Lelievre patterned fabric. Custom marble tiles created a beautiful envelope in the adjoining Ensuite Bath. Completing this beautiful home with traditional heirloom pieces within a contemporary context created a connection to the past that feels modern, fresh and personal.
The clients, a builder in the area, enlisted Elizabeth Metcalfe to re-design their large family home. The full-scope renovation commenced. With three young children, the clients required a home that was sophisticated yet casual, luxurious yet practical and as the clients’ style had evolved, a home with a more contemporary approach. The kitchen design direction was the starting point of this project. With a modern aesthetic, unexpected lighting and refined finishes, this kitchen is truly unique. Off the kitchen, the light-filled dining area and double-height family room is a wonderful, textural backdrop to the open kitchen. In the back of the home the mudroom, laundry and closets were completely re-designed to accommodate double the amount of storage but with a more feminine look. Elizabeth Metcalfe transformed the front room of the home where the dining room once was, to a sophisticated den/lounge to entertain friends and clients.
Perfect clients are those that can convey ‘the feeling’ that they want to achieve and have the confidence and trust in their designers to be able to interpret and successfully develop a concept. Elizabeth Metcalfe clients were very specific with the overall feeling and usage for their new Georgian inspired home. They wanted a home that was both luxurious and elegant, but also comfortable and welcoming. A home that would be perfect for entertaining large parties, but intimate enough for their family daily lives.
