Going from vintage to modern, from mid-century to contemporary, we owe the beauty of home decor to the interior designers who use their vision to create the perfect mise-en-scène. They were our inspiration to write a list of 10 of the best interior designers based in New York.

1.Thomas O’Brien (Aero Studios)

Thomas O’Brien created Aero Studios in 1992 alongside William Sofield. Sofield left 3 years later and since then Thomas is the solo owner of the company. He is known for his “warm modernism” and the way he mixes vintage and modern in his interior design. O’Brien has established partnerships with many important American brands, even though his main focus lays on the design of private residences. He designed bath plumbing for Waterworks , textiles for Lee Jofa, tableware for Reed & Barton and designed a boutique for Empoio Armani, just to name a few.

The Alex Papachristidis Interiors was created in 1987 under the name Anderson, Papachristidis Interiors, a partnership between Alex Papachristidis and Leslie Anderson. When Anderson left in the mid nineties and after the joining of Antoinette Raeymaekers in 1996 (and her departure in 2004), Papachristidis became the only owner of the company. He is known for his modern eye and described as an eclectic traditionalist.

4. Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson (Drake/Anderson)

Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson are two award-wining interior designers based in New York that set their goal at creating a luxurious and refined design in order to bring sophistication into the world of interior design. They created Drake/Anderson. Their trademark is their eclecticism, always proving that personality is crucial in the world of interior design. If Drake is praised for being one of the first designers to make Modernism famous in interior design, Anderson is capable of bringing a vast number of historic periods together.

5. Brian McCarthy (Brian J. McCarthy Inc.)

In 1992 Brian McCarthy founded his homonymous New York based company Brian J. McCarthy Inc. Since then he has been decorating residences not only in New York but also all around the world. He was responsible for the design of the State Rooms in the Winfield House in 2005.

Based in New York City, Joe Nahem has been working for over 30 years in the industry. After the death of Tom Fox in 2003, with whom he created Fox-Nahem Associates, Joe Nahem has continued his path creating pieces that embody elegance and luxury. The materials he uses come from different parts of the world such as South Africa, Switzerland and Brooklyn. He is the interior designer that decorated Robert Downey Jr.’s house in the Hamptons.

Brandolini came to New York in 1979 to work as a salesperson. She was later discovered by Franca Sozzani and started to work for the Italian Vogue before initiating her career as an interior designer. Due to her French, Venezuelan and Vietnamese heritage, she is able to create places filled with culture mixed with vibrant colors.
