Tanya Singh<\/em><\/span><\/strong> is a highly recognised interior designer from India, whose work crystallises around a strong sense of material, an obsession for details and the study of light. The spaces she designs are embraced by a sense of timelessness, having palpable energy and juxtaposition of old, new and unexpected objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it is no wonder that Tanya Singh<\/strong> and her residential project \u2018Where the Sun Sets<\/span>\u2018 are contestants for the Frame Awards 2021<\/strong> for residential design! Take a ride with us to this amazing large apartment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situated on the South Mumbai coastline<\/span>, \u2018Where the Sun Sets<\/span>\u2018 apartment overlooks the Indian Ocean<\/span>. The project is deeply inspired by the light of the setting sun. The original layout was deconstructed to create an open and expansive space with an intention to embrace the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the core area, the living, dining and study<\/span> are merged into a singular space delineated by sliding glass panels. Crucially, the glass used is reflective or transparent based on lighting conditions. Conceived to pull in the sunset sky, a custom installation floats above the dining table like a pink cloud.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The private areas consisting of two bedrooms, a gym and spa<\/span>, flank either side of the central gathering space and are connected by a green terrace balcony. Materially, the shell maintains homogeneity with Venetian plaster, stucco and white panelled walls<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Private spaces are distinguished by terrazzo floors<\/span>, cast in situ<\/span>, with brass <\/span>dividers shaping patterns specific to the rooms. The shell is layered with bursts of colour through furniture, rugs and artwork. The only room without a view of the ocean, the spa is meticulously crafted from oak wood <\/span>and Marmara marble<\/span>, a secluded haven from the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two themes set this project apart: overcoming the challenge of creating intimacy in a large space to ensure it feels like a home and delivering excellence in detail and customisation through an unprecedented collaboration between artisans across continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The circular form solves for creating warmth within the expanse of space. Its geometry exudes intimacy for circles contain and hold within. Visible and invisible circles create gravitational centrifuges everywhere. In the living area, the sofa traces a line along with the lights on the ceiling above to complete a circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project celebrates craftsmanship and meaningful, collaborative work. The pink cloud, study bookshelf and other items were made in Italy <\/span>and installed together with local teams. Traditional Indian <\/span>artisans were empowered through modern technologies and new techniques to use age-old skillsets to create contemporary design such as the meticulously detailed spa, handcrafted from timber and marble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From bedroom furniture to custom shaped rugs, an emphasis on the bespoke <\/span>is evident throughout. In a mass-manufactured world, this home cherishes the handmade, while erasing boundaries through cross-cultural collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
