Workshop\/APD\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>owners\u00a0Matt Berman and Andrew Kotchen were asked to help renovate one of Chicago\u2019s most historic hotels a 1912 Michigan Avenue building and they immediately knew that this was and incredible oportunity especially because it was a bulding with a lot of character. This project is\u00a0About Last Knife, a\u00a0the restaurant in\u00a0Hotel Julian. Originally constructed in 1912 by\u00a0Chicago architect\u00a0Benjamin Marshall, the Hotel\u2019s building served as an office for decades before being boarded up\u2014until 2016.<\/p>\n

About Last Knife, a mixture of a\u00a0steakhouse-meets-gastropub,\u00a0needed a design team all of its own\u2014one with the experience in designing spaces that balance modern trends that\u2019s why Worshop\/APD was the right team for the job.\u00a0 They already had proven their experience with\u00a0Chef Dale Talde\u2019s Massoni and Talde in New York and Miami Beach, respectively.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cWe really like the industrial components of Chicago and wanted to capture the essence of that. We wanted to reveal the grit of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although the space needed a renovation, the team tried their best to don\u2019t give a feeling of \u201ctoo new\u201d to the restaurant.\u00a0The resulting worn-in look was accomplished through simple but effective touches throughout the space, including concrete flooring with a perfectly distressed patina, midcentury French chandeliers, a Silestone quartz bar top, and floor-to-ceiling doors with mesh screening.<\/p>\n

An interesting detail about this renovation was the\u00a0mural of Marshall himself, the architect responsible for some of the city\u2019s most notable turn-of-the-century buildings\u2014the restaurant\u2019s home being no exception.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt serves as a tribute to him\u2014it\u2019s a way of looking back from where we\u2019ve come while also moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
