Architecture news<\/strong><\/em>: Business finance specialist Lawrence Salem<\/strong> <\/em>and project manager Gabriel Chipperfield<\/strong><\/em> had been looking for while for the perfect project to kick-start their joint property venture, when they came across a Grade II listed house in West London\u2019s<\/strong> Eccleston Street<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was a mess when we found it,\u2019 recalls Chipperfield. \u2018So the project was primarily about straightening everything out, restoring the original 1850s Georgian building<\/strong><\/em>, whilst adding several modern extensions<\/strong><\/em> to the top, bottom, and back of the house.\u2019 The pair developed and designed the majestic old house<\/strong><\/em> together, \u2018under the watchful eye\u2019 of the latter\u2019s father, celebrated London<\/strong><\/em> based architect <\/strong>D<\/em>avid Chipperfield.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Once planning permission was granted, the team focused on opening up the space, completely rebuilding the house with a new basement, rear fa\u00e7ade and \u2018a new steelwork to frame everything and support the new top floor and those marble bathtubs<\/strong><\/em>\u2018.<\/p>\n

The redesigned house\u2019s contemporary style<\/strong><\/em> and expertly finished interior<\/strong>\u00a0design<\/strong><\/em> proves that the apple never falls far from the tree, in terms of both creative flair and attention to detail. The sophisticated, clean white interiors<\/strong><\/em>, combining luxurious Carrara marble<\/strong><\/em>, restored original timber flooring<\/strong><\/em> and Pietra Serena limestone in the new built areas, feel modern<\/strong> <\/em>yet warm and intimate. Leather elements designed into the joinery help to that end, as did the extensive customised ironmongery and joinery applied for the high spec fittings. Lighting<\/strong><\/em> was provided by the Milan based company Viabizzuno<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The generous property spans 3,900 sq ft and six levels that include four bedrooms<\/strong> <\/em>\u2013 the top floor one can be transformed into a gym or library<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 a reception room, cinema, garden room<\/strong><\/em> and terrace. An 800 sq ft kitchen<\/strong><\/em> and dining area<\/strong><\/em> sits in the extension\u2019s lower level, amply lit by a pair of lightwells that cut through the new part, allowing the light to travel deep into the basement. In fact, it is as much the crisp interior<\/strong><\/em> as these views through different levels, skylights and select double height spaces that help give the historical house<\/strong><\/em> its particularly airy feel.<\/p>\n

With Eccleston Street<\/strong><\/em> complete and awaiting its new owner, the team is now focusing on its next steps. \u2018This is the first in a series of projects that we are doing,\u2019 says Chipperfield<\/strong><\/em>. \u2018We\u2019re honing our skills at the moment.<\/p>\n

We still need our big idea but there are a lot of basic things to get good at; we do our own contracting, which helps save the most time and money without compromising on quality \u2013 but it\u2019s obviously a lot more work. As soon as we become fluent we\u2019ll try and up the ante. I would like to do a small hotel<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0interior design<\/strong> <\/em>but I haven\u2019t told Lawrence<\/strong><\/em> yet\u2019\u00a0says Chipperfield<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n
