Best known for her seminal built works (Vitra Fire Station, Land Formation-One, Bergisel Ski-Jump, Strasbourg Tram Station, the Rosenthal Centre for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, the BMW Central Building in Leipzig, the Hotel Puerta America \u2013 interior \u2013 in Madrid, the Ordrupgaard Museum Extention in Copenhagen and the Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg), her central concerns involve a simultaneous engagement in practice, teaching and research.<\/p>\n

Zaha Hadid<\/strong><\/em> has been the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004.<\/p>\n

Zaha Hadid<\/strong><\/em> was born on 31 October 1950 in\u00a0Baghdad. Her childhood saw Baghadad\u2019s better days without strife and warfare. There she attended a religiously diverse Catholic school and was instructed in French by nuns. Her father was a\u00a0politician and it was assumed and expected that she would further her educational studies. She attended the American University in Beirut where she studied Math. Her family fled the country after Saddam Hussein came to power, and the outbreak of war with Iran.\u00a0In 1972 Hadid moved to London<\/strong><\/em> and enrolled at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. In 1980 she\u00a0opened her own office which proved a bit of a challenge; at first her ideas were more in demand than her actual designs.\u00a0During the 1980s, she also taught at the Architectural Association.<\/p>\n

Today Zaha Hadid<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is well revered and in the forefront of architectural design. She has broken through the glass ceiling and her modern, cutting edge philosophies have helped her to push the boundaries of architecture<\/strong><\/em> and design. \u00a0Today her firm employs 350 people and has handled 950 projects in over 44 countries.<\/p>\n

Hadid, while considered and thought of as a revered architect, has also branched into the world of interiors.\u00a0Her constant search for an aesthetic vision encompasses all areas of design, from the large exteriors of her architecture to interior design<\/strong><\/em> and furniture. The interiors are just another extension of the outside. Her interior talent is seen at The Hotel Puerta America in Madrid where Hadid and other renown architects were commissioned to designed various rooms within the hotel.<\/p>\n

Background & Realizations: the projects<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hadid has also undertaken some high-profile interior design<\/strong> <\/em>work, including the\u00a0Mind Zone<\/em>\u00a0at the\u00a0Millennium Dome\u00a0in London<\/strong><\/em> as well as creating fluid furniture installations within the\u00a0Georgian\u00a0surroundings of Home House private members club in Marylebone, and the Z.CAR hydrogen-powered, three-wheeled automobile. In 2009 she worked with the clothing brand\u00a0Lacoste, to create a new, high fashion, and advanced boot.\u00a0In the same year, she also collaborated with the brassware manufacturer Triflow Concepts\u00a0to produce two new designs in her signature parametric architectural style.<\/p>\n

Her thinking of spacial issues is what sets her apart from the crowd \u2013 both men and women. The BMW Central Building was based on Zaha Hadid<\/strong> <\/em>beliefs that a building is a space that is multi-faceted and multi-dimensional. Here she reinterprets a\u00a0traditional\u00a0office. The building and its functions become a more \u201cdynamic, engaging nerve center.\u201d Her fluidity transcends the traditional blue collar\/white collar spatial divisions, effectively blurring the barrier.<\/p>\n

The Most Iconic Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2010, Hadid<\/strong><\/em> was commissioned by the Iraqi government to design<\/strong><\/em> the new building for the\u00a0Central Bank of Iraq. An agreement to complete the design<\/strong><\/em> stages of the new CBI building was finalized on 2 February 2012, at a ceremony inLondon<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0This will be her first project in her native Iraq.\u00a0Other work includes Pierres Vives, the new departmental records building (to host three institutions, namely, the archive, the library and the sports department), for French department\u00a0H\u00e9rault, in\u00a0Montpellier.<\/p>\n

Hadid<\/strong><\/em>\u2019s project was named as the best for the\u00a0Vilnius Guggenheim Hermitage Museum\u00a0in 2008. She designed the\u00a0Innovation Tower\u00a0for\u00a0Hong Kong Polytechnic University, scheduled for completion in 2013, and the Chanel Mobile Art Pavilion that was displayed in Hong Kong in 2008. She completed a new building for\u00a0Evelyn Grace Academy\u00a0in London<\/strong><\/em> in 2010.<\/p>\n

Talent is a heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n

Zaha Hadid<\/strong><\/em> has taught at the\u00a0Harvard\u00a0Graduate School of Design<\/strong><\/em>, where she was the\u00a0Kenzo Tange\u00a0Professorship and the Sullivan Chair at the\u00a0University of Illinois at Chicago\u2019s\u00a0School of Architecture. She also served as guest professor at the\u00a0Hochschule f\u00fcr bildende K\u00fcnste Hamburg\u00a0(HFBK Hamburg), the\u00a0Knowlton\u00a0School of Architecture at\u00a0Ohio State University, the Masters Studio at\u00a0Columbia University, and the\u00a0Eero Saarinen\u00a0Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at the\u00a0Yale School of Architecture<\/strong><\/em>. From 2000 on, Hadid has been a guest professor at The University of Applied Arts \u2013 Vienna, in the Zaha Hadid Master Class Vertical-Studio.<\/p>\n

Hadid was named an honorary member of the\u00a0American Academy of Arts and Letters\u00a0and an honorary\u00a0fellow of the American Institute of Architects. She has been on the board of trustees of\u00a0The Architecture<\/strong><\/em> Foundation. She is currently professor at the\u00a0University of Applied Arts Vienna\u00a0in Austria.<\/p>\n

The Creator\u2019s Choice<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hadid<\/strong><\/em>\u2019s architectural language has been described as \u201cfamously extravagant\u201d with many of her projects sponsored by \u201cdictator states\u201d.\u00a0Rowan Moore described Hadid\u2019s\u00a0Heydar Aliyev Center\u00a0as \u201cnot so different from the colossal cultural palaces long beloved of Soviet and similar regimes\u201d. Architect Sean Griffiths characterised Hadid\u2019s work as \u201can empty vessel that sucks in whatever ideology might be in proximity to it\u201d. Art historian Maike Aden criticises in particular the foreclosure of Zaha Hadid<\/strong><\/em>\u2019s architecture<\/strong><\/em> of the MAXXI in Rome towards the public and the urban life that undermines even the most impressive program to open the museum.<\/p>\n

Despite Hadid<\/strong><\/em>\u2019s level of success, of which she is grateful, she claims that it\u2019s been and continues to be a very long struggle. She still sees her fair share of rejection which she claims keeps her in place and helps her to think about things and create things in a different way.<\/p>\n

The Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Arts in Cincinatti, Ohio was the first project to be completed by Hadid<\/strong><\/em> and the first museum in the United States to be designed by a woman. Her idea was to bring the city into the building, an open, \u201curban carpet\u201d, welcome to everyone. She wanted to bring contemporary art to those who were not used to or exposed to such. In back of the museum she has created a backdrop as though the carpet is rolled out \u2013 a sort of flights of fancy allowing visitors see all these different spaces. Her desire to move away from the \u201cwhite cube\u201d that we think of when we think of architecture<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Here movement and light flow giving each gallery and exhibition a unique feel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
