\u201cFornasetti<\/a> had this amazing imagination, and his works are whimsical, humorous, playful, fantastical\u2026 I find them hard to resist,\u201d says New York socialite Claire Creatore, who is selling a number of pieces from her Piero Fornasetti collection in an online Christies<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0auction of 61 lots which ended on December 1.<\/p>\n

\"Piero<\/a><\/p>\n

Something of a renaissance man, Fornasetti, who died in 1988, was incredibly prolific during his lifetime and proficient in many disciplines, from painting and engraving to ceramics and design, producing textiles, furniture, glassware, tableware and small collectables. His distinctive playful, graphic and often surreal style remains popular today and his son Barnaba Fornasetti continues to design in his name today.<\/p>\n

\"Piero<\/a><\/p>\n

Creatore\u2019s Fornasetti collection dates back to the 1950s, but she first spied his work at a Christie\u2019s Interiors sale during the 1970s. It was while visiting antiques shops with her interior designer friend Lucien Rees Roberts that she acquired her first piece. \u201cI was walking with Lucien, and, in an antiques shop, saw a small pebble-shaped object. At the time, I didn\u2019t know it was a paperweight \u2013 I was just so intrigued that, on a whim, I decided to buy it. I slipped it in my pocket and took it home. That was the beginning!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Piero<\/a><\/p>\n

Over 20 years Creatore has amassed an impressive collection, including special numbered edition plates and some notable vintage trays, which she used to store her pearl necklaces. She names two of the plate designs as her personal favourites: \u201cThe\u00a0Zodiac<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>plates are, I think, just gorgeous beyond words, and I think the\u00a0Astrolabio<\/em>\u00a0plates are just amazing \u2013 I could feast my eyes on them forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Piero<\/a><\/p>\n

The collection comes to Christie\u2019s because Creatore is downsizing and selling her New Jersey home where many of the pieces have been stored. \u201cI must say, collecting Fornasetti has been just the most delightful experience, because of the joy and beauty in each piece \u2013 I think it\u2019s time to recycle the pleasure.\u201d<\/p>\n
