\nThis actualty could be the work of some BRABBU\u2019s designer, joining inspiration from one of the most iconic tribes in the world, Maori, with modern art<\/strong><\/em>. But it isn\u2019t. Designed by the New Zealand Architects Pattersons<\/a>, the recently inaugurated Len Lye Centre is not just a gleaming new landmark for New Zealand\u2019s seaside<\/a> city of New Plymouth; even though its shimmering mirror-effect steel facades ensure it states its presence with panache.<\/p>\n

The new project \u00a0is also the country\u2019s very first museum dedicated to a single artist \u2013 pioneering Christchurch-born filmmaker and kinetic sculptor Len Lye.<\/p>\n

Len Lye\u2019s philosophy that \u2018great architecture goes 50\/50 with great art\u2019 provided key inspiration for Pattersons. By creating a dynamic, shiny and sinuous fa\u00e7ade that brings to mind a moving theatre curtain, the architects hint at Lye\u2019s kinetic art. The facades\u2019 curves manipulate natural light to create a range of reflections, depending on the day and the season. At the same time, the skin \u2013 polished steel \u2013 ties the building with its locale, as it celebrates the pioneering steel works in the country\u2019s Taranaki region.

Inside the gallery, daylight penetrates the fa\u00e7ade through gaps on the external walls, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. For the internal arrangement, Pattersons drew inspiration from the Maori \u2018meeting house\u2019 \u2013 the focal point of the traditional Maori community. At the same time, they loosely based the layout on a traditional temple, at the same time telling the story of the legendary Len Lye and his iconic body of work. The \u2018adyton,\u2019 the most sacred and private part of a temple (usually located far away from the entrance) is used in the museum to house Len Lye\u2019s archive.<\/p>\n

By adopting a temple-like internal arrangement for the museum\u2019s programme, the architects created yet another tie-in with the artist\u2019s approach. \u2018Lye was fascinated with temples and the design uses principles from the classical world as well as Polynesian forms and ideas\u201d, says design director Andrew Patterson. \u201cThese influenced Lye\u2019s work and after all, he was the client.\u201d Looking at the building\u2019s outline from above, it creates a \u2018koru\u2019 form (a Maori spiral shape) \u2013 one more reference to the rich local Polynesian culture.<\/p>\n
