The Project

Captain Kelly’s Cottage is a restoration of the original weatherboard cottage on a bay of Bruny Island in Tasmania. Captain Kelly built the cottage in the 1830’s. The original cottage was constituted by two structures: bedrooms and kitchen, surrounded by a wide verandah. A new living area has been built between these structures. The original verandah was one of the main inspirations for the restoration. The layered soffit and exposed ceiling rafters have been continued in the new entry and living spaces to connect new with old through this language of ceiling layers.

Architects

John Wardle Architects has a diverse team of architects and interiors designers that work across Australia and internationally from their office in Melbourne. Their works ranges across education, residential and commercial projects. The firm has won many awards, among which the prestigious Sir Zelman Cowen Award for best public building in Australia in 2002 and 2006.

The Project

Black and white spaces, including a sculptural staircase and a wine cellar, are found across this brick house, named Maison du Parc, inspired by the architecture of early-century mansions. The building received a redesigned rear facade and a dramatic interior renovation. The house also features a garden, a pool and a detached garage. The black and white is visually contrasted by the herringbone-patterned dark wood flooring.

Architects

La SHED founded in 2011, has developed a thorough expertise in the renovation, transformation and construction of buildings of all types and all historical backgrounds. Their projects lay on openness, lighting and alignment and they use sustainable, affordable and classic materials. They give a special attention  to finishing details and the quality of their projects.

A White House (RIGI Design)

The Project

This Shangai three-storey family residence named “A White House“, built in the 1940’s has been elegantly renovated with meticulous attention to detail. The main challenge was to bring daylight into the heart of the building. In order to do so, the original walled-in stairwell on the north side of the house has been replaced by a new, centrally located open staircase. As Liu Kai, the chief designer explains, “the whole building starts from light and vertical space”.

Architects

RIGI is one of the most innovative design practices working in China. RIGI stays close to the social and economic trends, and has a body of work that ranges from branding, space design to visual design and product design.

The Project

The Triplex at Sant Antoni in Barcelona was a precarial and healthyness home. In other to renovated it, they knocked down one of the existent vault to lower the rear facade till the underground, creating a new courtyard. Several of the rough stone walls have been left in their found state. The studio has freshened up the space with new oak parquet floors, the kitchen was decorated with fresh white cabinetry and black-frame dining chairs.

Architects

Valentí Albareda Tiana is a Barcelona based firm. They are masters on renovating places, specially those that have a deep connection with spanish culture and history. They make sure their clients needs are met and take very special atention to detail.

Project

The Bavaria Road Studio is a complete refurbishment of a former Methodist Chapel in North London. It serves as an office and studio apartment. The property measures approximately 988 sqm, to include an entrance hall, a bathroom, a huge reception room with open-plan kitchen, and a sleeping area on the mezzanine. There is a huge amount of storage in the roof space. This bulding has a resin floor with underfloor heating. Its structure and the contrast of the steel and timber make the Bavaria Road Studio a fantastic example of material combination.

Architects

West Architecture, based in London, was founded in 2006. They work on residential, commercial and public buildings. The studio believes in logical, rational design and technical ability when in comes to adapt and repurpose historic structures. They use viable materials with a purpose. Their brand of architecture is unique and promises to keep showing us just that.

Projects

The original 2 bedroom apartment transformed into 1 flexible studio space named KEVIN. To divide the house, an Engawa was created, in order to maximizing light penetration into the interior while doubling as circulation  space. As the apartment has a tight space budget, storage space has to be carefully arranged. Appliances are hidden behind white oak built­in closets and shelves.

Architects

JAAK Design focus on the design of living spaces. They believe that the design of these spaces has a very different mindset than it did decades ago: its no longer luxury oriented  and to serve nobles and affluents. The perfect design can only be obtained in a specially attention to detail, a special selection of furniture and a great combination of form and material. They believe that the century we live in should be dynamic, diversified, and most importantly, comfortable. They provide a design proposal that goes through many processes: it includes a proposed layout, conceptual sketches, site measuring and project quotation.

Project

An office space – without either bathrooms, kitchen or storage – transformed into a home. This is Hidden Tints. Traces of the 19th century were there,like worn wooden floors and ornaments and three old tiled ovens. All the old characteristics were painted in thick layers of white color with modern spotlights in all ceilings. The result is a perfect harmony when it coms to colors.

To Note Design Studio Creativity, it’s all about searching for what is missing. It’s important to constantly realign thoughts and expressions to find that moment of insight. The team collaborates intensely, with passion and design discipline, whether is comes to interior, product, graphic, architecture, and strategies.

Project

With 350 square meters and two storeys, Loft Panzerhalle was a challenge. The three main areas of the house (bedroom, bathroom and guestroom) are distributed throughout the space, as separate bodies. The center of the room is the kitchen, a seven-meter-long block. The whole composition is rounded off by a concrete sculpture, or stair sculpture, which not only opens up all rooms, but also appears to be carrying them.

Architects

Smartvoll is an architecture firm based in Austria. Above all, they believed that “form is the result of testing geometry against the content and principles” they established with the concept, and the other way around. They are an award winning company that have worked on companies, on community centers, restaurants among others.

Project

#7, Southlands is located in Mumbai and its main goal was to transform an 1930s art deco aparment into a modern one. It’s main inspiration came from a “Bombay-ish” vibe. The harmony and cleaness of the place and the fact that its functionality goes way further than domesticity.

Squareworks is a Creative Digital Agency based in India. They design funcional buildings and never forget its aesthetical side. They worked with any kind of client, whether it is companies, start ups or world famous brands.

Project

The Lapa Apartment is in an 1819 building from the Portuguese ‘Pombalino’ period, in the historical centre of the capital, Lisbon. The remodeling served as a way to enhance the historical heritage while introducing contemporary features that celebrate the traditional craftsmanship as well as Lisbon’s  natural light and its magnificent river views. The entrance corridor connects two distinctive areas of the apartment, the private area and the social area. The social includes an open kitchen-living, bathroom and an outdoor terrace. Natural lime plaster walls create a background. These features include the original building timber structure and 1819 frescos on the walls.

Studio Gameiro is a portuguese architecture firm founded by João Gameiro that focuses on creating opportunities for alternative discourses. All together, the firm explores contemporary notions of tailor-made spacial, lighting and furniture design, always keeping in mind the essence of the Portuguese culture.

Project

Chapter Kings Cross is located close to the Kings Cross St Pancras Train Station. It was previously used as headquarters by Natwest and the it got turned into a student living 10 years ago. The main hall is in concret and steel construction, and as a homage to the train station, the booth-style seating areas can resemble train carriages.

Architects

Tigg + Coll Architects were established in 2008, founded by David Tigg and Rachel Coll. They work with high-end residentials, mixed-use development and masterplanning. They have also been growing their expertise in the student residential sector.

Project

QO mixes luxury, wellness and sustainability. Every aspect of the hotel is designed to reduce environmental impact and to create the best possible guest experience. The way the customer experiences the space and the views out over the city, parks and river, as well as the materials used were some of the most important characteristics upon doing creating this project.

Conran and Partners is driven by a strong and unwavering belief that great design improves the quality of people’s lives. They focus on “creating spaces that are a joy to be in” Their architectural projects range from single properties to regeneration schemes, and they are renowned for breathing new life into historic buildings.

Project

A restaurante in Taipei that serves authentic Thai cuisine, was the focus of this project. The Inbetween a Thai Street was transformed from a long and narrow site into a restaurant with the looks of a night market. With handmade bamboo nets cascading over each dinning table, this project takes you into the street of Thailand, in a fabulous experience.

J.C. Architecture is a multi award winning New York and Taiwan based design firm that includes architecture, interior, industrial, visual design and jewelry design, collaborating with clients from various industries. JCA develops, researches and experiments methodologies for new possibilities.

Project

A salad bar and hydroponic farming system in London, the LOKAL gives its visitors the opportunity to see the farm for themselves, organizes workshops and allows visitors to try their nutritious microgreens: a project that aims to provide a space-saving and sustainable way for people to grow their own food.  It comprised a wooden structure of approximately two square metres, accommodating three levels of trays filled with crops that grown hydroponically – set into water filled with nutrients, rather than soil, with artificial lights overhead.

Spacon & X (Spatial Conversion & Cross-functionalism) is a Copenhagen based design and architecture studio. They work on a wide range of scales, from products to interior organization to larger building projects. They believe that every surface and volume can serve more than one purpose. SPACE10 has as its main goal sustainability and innovative solutions in order to create a better world. They collaborate with companies that think in the same way: the partnership with Spacon & X turned into reality their common goal.

KOKO Restaurant (Studio Locomotive)

Project

An Asian-fusion restaurant, one of three dining outlets at The Village Coconut Island: this is Koko Restaurant. Modest and secretive from outside, this restaurant is flavorful indoors with fire-flame-shade installation and decoration from a variety of preserved local grain, spice, and herb glass jars. Definitely a place to visit if you ever set foot in Thailand.

Architects

Studio Locomotive is a Thailand interior architectural design hub launched in 2016. It is purposefully created to inspire the way of living, deliver an experience, and bring emotions. Beyond a reasonable doubt, good design is about making the right decision.

Projects

Nobu Hotel Shoreditch is a steel, glass and concrete building across seven floors. The hotel ensures a holistic approach by putting together the interiors along with the architecture that is unique to its Shoreditch location. The background of this project is its industrial heritage, cutting-edge culture and hospitality scene.

Studio Mica is made of highly talented people. Their teams work in a flexible studio environment and have expertise in architecture, urban design, conservation architecture & landscape. They produce working and presentation models using both traditional techniques and 3D printing and lasercutting.
