Woods Bagot is a global design architecture and consulting firm from Australia, specialising in building design and planning, across a wide variety of sectors and disciplines, including residential, commercial and retail designs.

Woods Bagot was founded in 1869 and has embraced a wide variety of architectural styles since its inception. The project we are going to present today – Tidal Arc House – can be found in Melbourne, embedded in the cliff edge of Flinders.

Tidal Arc House is a different take on a traditional Australian beach house, using references to the dark and stoic elements that comprise the shoreline rather than the expected ocean inspiration.

The design is entirely site-specific – considering topography and outlook. Nestled into place, key spaces are deliberately oriented to champion the views beyond. Living levels compress and open out to the sky, enveloping inhabitants in the exhilarating impact of the location.

Partnering with interior design firm Hecker Guthrie and stylist Simone Haag to complete the interior experience, Woods Bagot designed outward-facing areas that work in harmony with discreet and quiet spaces that feature dark, modest materials – creating a refuge tucked away from the views.

INSPIRED BY THE LOOK – PAGAUNG STOOL

Dark and textural timbers, stones, textiles and refined metals throughout reference the tones of the shore and impart a welcoming tactility. Divided into two living areas and separate bedroom suites, the 4-bedroom family home has been planned entirely around the series of segmented ceiling patterns created by beams radiating from three different origins. A play on restraint and full exposure, the opening and closing of spaces to the view creates a dynamic response to the coastal setting.

Tidal Arc House demonstrates the intrinsic benefits of connection to nature. Reflecting the epic beauty of the Australian landscape without sycophancy to the beach shack or timber bungalow, it marks an evolution in coastal interiors and responsive design.

The design decisions behind the home allow inhabitants to feel a part of, rather than apart from, the drama of its setting. The perfect vessel for enjoying Flinders’ rich natural offerings comfortably, opportunities for seamless movement from inside to outside and from upstairs to downstairs allow for the benefits of the sun and sea breezes to be enjoyed.

The building’s high-quality functional performance is evident in its internal planning. The master bedroom is neatly separated from the open-facing deck on the upper level with timber and stone-clad staircase, and an additional private area with three self-contained bedrooms is shielded by curved, timber-lined enclosures. Perfectly balanced, the home offers space for retreat and entertainment.

The use of materials such as the dark stained oak timber that clads the ceilings and walls and the tonal grey stone used on the hearth and other features, impart an elegant tactility that speaks directly to the home’s context – Tidal Arc House couldn’t exist anywhere else.
