We are giving you a glimpse of her profile, her debut as an industrial designer, her collection and future projects.
Name: Sharon Sides
When did you realized that designing was your passion?
When I decided to be an industrial designer I was working in a big international company. At first, I thought of interior design but as I started exploring the design world I knew I was destined for industrial design. I quit my job and started my studies at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. From the beginning I knew I made the right choice; the continuous strive for knowledge and the passion to create and innovate inspired me to keep up the hard work.
The pieces from “Stumps Collection” are the first pieces created as a professional industrial designer?
Yes, STUMPS is my first collection.
How “Stumps Collection” was born?
STUMPS deals with the transference of images from nature to design projects using technology.
The design process offered the different outlook on a tree trunk, which is normally associated with beams utilizing its length, and focused on the rings that appear on the actual stump. This point of departure presents us with a new morphology.
The pattern implies on the history of the tree as well as its age.
As part of the project, patterns of tree stumps were etched on metal. The metal sheets were bent into chairs, when the outline of the tree stump was kept intact.
Shaping and bending each piece took into account the original outline of the tree stump, consequently bestowing each piece with its own unique character.
Do you intend to add more elements to “Stumps Family” or we are going to have some novelties regarding a new collection?
In addition to the 3 original STUMPS chairs, I launched a few months ago stools, bar stools and coffee tables. I am also working on a new family member of the collection, which was not revealed yet.
Have you ever designed in collaboration with studios, brands or individual designers?
The STUMPS collection gained worldwide recognition, was exhibited in design studios abroad and published in design magazines such as Dezeen, designboom, Casa vogue, AA13 etc.
In addition to that I am working for prop Ezri Tarazi, a worldwide known industrial designer.
How do you characterize your design process and design pieces?
My work process always starts with a comprehensive research inclusive of interviews, observations and material researches. In each project I integrate the product necessities and requirements with my interpretation and inputs.
I always aim to bring an added value and over the past years I have experienced a vast variety of materials and techniques.
Innovation and different points of view are the guiding principles in every work process of mine.
Do you normally participate in design events? What will be next?
I am happy to participate in design events and exhibitions. At the moment, a participation in Auction House is planned.
What are your next projects?
I am continuing to explore nature, being the biggest hoard of solutions we can imagine. That is where my inspiration comes from and what, I believe, will inspire my next collection. Today’s life permits and encourages infinite creativity and new interpretations, we should be thankful for that.
