When it comes to design, there are few names quite as synonymous with the modernist movement of furniture design as that of the inimitable and timeless, Charles Eames. Born in 1907 in St. Louis, USA, Eames has gone on to become one of the 20th century’s most iconic and revered designers and this truly is testament to the quality of pieces that he produced over his career that spanned over 30 years.
Charles Eames produced timeless pieces of designer furniture and the body of his work predominantly consisted of pieces that were low-cost but highly practical. Such is the high esteem in which Eames is held, many of the pieces that he designed during the mid-20th century can now be found in New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
Although Charles Eames is often solely credited for his work, a large number of his pieces were actually designed in conjunction with his wife, Ray. She helped him create some of his most seminal pieces of designer furniture and certainly deserves recognition for helping shape a modernist face of furniture design for which Eames and his contemporaries like Hans Wegner, Harry Bertoia and Arne Jacobsen were undoubtedly the catalyst. Eames crafted some unforgettable pieces of designer furniture but perhaps his most recognisable and sought after piece is that of the Eames lounge chair and ottoman – which he originally designed as a birthday gift for his friend, the movie director, Billy Wilder. You can see some of Eames’ most recognisable pieces of designer furniture below:

Charles Eames has gone down in the annuls of design history and rightly so when you consider the unparalleled influence he has had on the face of furniture design. Few designers before or since Charles Eames have had such a dramatic impact on the way we approach interior design and it really is of little surprise that the popularity of his key pieces remain just as high today because, when you produce timeless designs and flawlessly crafted furniture, it truly does never grow old.
